Dennis Ayling was the Lighting Cameraman on the Model Unit (his name was misspelled as 'Denys' in the credits), he came to us from the commercials side of the industry and told great stories from this sector. He had a very organized way of working, constantly referred to his notebooks where he would record the various lighting setups for a given shot. |

Deny's son Tim Ayling found a can of rushes from the days of 'Alien' and Technicolor, Pinewood kindly transferred the film for us. It shows two takes of the Nostromo flying over the alien planet although it wasn't used in the film. |

Dennis Ayling was in the RAF photographic unit during WW2 (he fought in Burma for part of the war - he even took pics of the Japanese surrender) - here is a great one of him with a wind-up Eyemo cine camera in the jungle. |
Deny lighting a commercial while working at Pearl & Dean advertising in the 60's, he worked with Derek Vanlint during this period of time too. Their photographic styles matched well when Deny lit the models at Bray Studio while Derek was at Shepperton on the main unit. |
With cigarette permanently glued to his lower lip he soldiered on to the end. |
His painstaking work would pay off with shots like this production still that Ridley Scott signed. |
Deny filled up 5 notebooks during his time on 'Alien' detailing the various positions of lights on a given setup. His son, Tim Ayling gave me permission to scan through them, they are particularly intriguing because he also noted the days that the effects shots were filmed on. |
